Since my fellow graduates are making the offer, I'll do likewise. If any of you seniors are interested in coming to Notre Dame or just want to get some more information on the school, drop me an email. I'd be glad to have any of you over for an overnight or a tour. The mens crew here isn't varsity but these guys are pretty hardcore during the offseason. I've yet to row with them on the water so I can't really tell you much. Also, all the 03 boys, you guys better wake your sorry butts up for the turkey row cause I'll be lookin for ya. Fatty McGizzle, that means don't stuff yourself too full of turkey the night before that you can't move in the morning. I hope to see you all soon. |

I will be in Chicago for the Christening of my grandson David over the Thanksgiving Weekend, so I will miss the annual exercise in bad judgement that we fondly refer to as the "Turkey Row." Although at 10 a.m. on Friday morning I will still be under the soporific influence of tryptophan caused by the ingestion of massive quantities of turkey, I will think of you guys on the river as I roll over for just one more cycle on my snooze alarm. Have a Happy Thanksgiving everyone. (ex) coachv |

Guys, it's clear that the goal for the spring season is to win the Midwest Championship. The Midwest championship, contrary to popular belief, is not won on the second weekend of May, but rather right now, in the offseason. Every erg piece, flight of stairs, and set of sit ups and squat thrusts is done now for those last 500 meters at Midwest, when you're bow ball to bow ball with St. Mary's. It will be during those 500 meters that you will find out if the work you did was good enough. Let's have no regrets in May by working our tails off now. Focusing on last year's Midwest and what we could have done is completely worthless now, we need to focus on what we will do this year if we want to take home the Midwest Championship. Let's do this. |

Even though crew is over we should not stop working. We must ready ourselves for spring by working hard in the offseason(which is now!). In the spring the teams get harder, the guys row harder, and the amount of strength needed grows. The question is: Will you be ready for it? |

As everyone is saying, keep up the work on the ergs. It is critical to come into winter conditioning in great shape (and no, you are not in great shape now). Winter conditioning will not be cakewalk like the fall has been, there will lots of work and lots of pain. Nor will this be like novice year, you must now prove yourselves against the varsity (and 2+ years, we must prove ourselves against the 1st years) In order to not only get on a good boat, but even on the team, you must be able to pull your own weight. Again, I cannot stress enough how important it is to work hard right now. Good luck with the erging. GO CATS |

Congratulations to the St. Ignatius crew for an excellent row at the Head of the Charles. With a sophomore-dominated boat, we really couldn't expect to challenge for the top positions, but you guys rowed about as well as you were capable of and looked great on the course. No one watching you race would have known you were such a young boat which has only rowed together a couple of weeks---you put everything you had into every stroke and rowed well together. Thanks to all the parents for their help in getting the crew to Boston, getting them fed (especially breakfast Sunday morning) and for their cheering on the course. Thanks to Coaches Saer and Bramante for having this crew so well-prepared to race. Go Cats. |

Congratulations on an excellent showing at the Head of the Ohio Regatta. Seconds for the V-8,V-4 and Novice 4, a fourth and fifth for the Novice 8's, and an excellent row by the Lightweight V-8 (within a minute of the best college lightweight crew)shows that this year's crew has the depth to defend its Midwest Crown in the spring. Guys, we have to maintain focus at practice this fall, or we will never achieve the success we all want for this season. This means being focused in the boat, on the ergs, and off the water. Merely pulling hard will just get you tired, technique and conditioning are needed to go fast, and that takes a lot of dedication, but it is better to be sore now than after coming up short at one of our races. Every moment spent in the boat at practice should be used to think about how you can help the boat improve and row better. If we work hard now, it will pay off when we start racing. |

Hey guys, I hope everyone is starting their fall season strong! In order to build up endurance, you must condition yourself with long erg pieces, in addition to the on-the-water practices. It's the only way St. Ignatius Crew is going to have a successful fall season: if everyone tries their best, and does their part to ensure that everyone else is trying their hardest. Encourage your teammates; drag them down to the multi-purpose room during 9th period (that's where i'll usually be) or after school to do ergs. You will only be successful if everyone does their best; you can't have half the boat slack off during the season, and the other half be working themselves to the edge of their envelope... its just not fair. so do your part, and erg a long peice (about 30 minutes or longer) at least twice a week. Go Cats! And I look forward to winning another Midwest Championship this year! |

I just wanted to say good job to all those who are coming back this year. Keep up the good work. Also, Jimmy Michael, Joe March, Keith Mokris, and I actually did that summer workout program last fall-winter when practices let out (late October- January). If you stick with it, it's really not too hard. So I am asking any rowers who are able to come to Ignatius every morning after official practices let out and to do the work out- it will be to your benefit (I dropped 40 seconds off my 2k time). I would like to thank the entire St. Ignatius Crew, and all the parents who have been so supportive of Joe and his family the last several months. It was good to see so many team mates, coaches and parents at his mom's wake, and to see members of the crew acting as ushers at the funeral mass. There have been so many acts of kindness that it would be almost impossible to aknowledge each one individually, but be assured they have not gone un-noticed. Once again, thank you all so very much |

Hello everyone...Hope you all had a good school year (I think I did). Anyway I want to congratulate Coach V on his retirement as Head Coach. I would like to take this time to personally thank you, Coach, for a wonderful experience that you gave me over my four years. The encouragement and advice was useful then and is still a guide to live by now. I hope others before and after me had as good, if not better, experience as i did, for that means that the sport of crew, with the excellent coaches that we had/have, taught them many useful skills. For me, I learned that yelling is a useful way to get the attention of people who are really hardheaded...hehehehehe ;-) Thanx again Coach V, I and many others really look up to you. Enjoy retirement!!! Barbour (coxswaine from '98 to '01) |

I would just like to thank all of the coaching staff, the parents, and everybody who makes rowing at Ignatius possible. Coach Valerian, I wish the best for you--it's going to be difficult without you, for me anyways. You've been a great teacher and mentor to me. Thank you for all you have done. |

I am sure it became easier as the victories started to tally, as the program gathered support and recognition, but I cannot imagine that in the early years, the most trying years, that many wifes would have the courage to defend their husband's discipline and convictions. The success of the program was only made possible by the love, respect and spirit of the lady behind our Coach V. THANK YOU DOROTHY! |

It was a proud moment during the past weekend to have attended the IRA Intercollegiate National Championships in Camden, NJ. To see the fine young alumni from St. Ignatius representing their respective universities at this event was outstanding. George (George's Freshman Eight won the recent Dad Vail Regatta!) & Matt Gantner and Mike Dyczkiewycz of St. Joseph University, Aaron Marcovy of Columbia University, Mike Horvath of Syracuse University and Dimitri Lebid of University of Washington. Aaron and his team won a silver medal in the Varsity Four! This is the result of outstanding coaching and support from Coach Bob Valerian, Coach Don Saer, Coach Pat Monroe, Coach Andrew Bramante, Coach Brad DeGrandis, Coach Tim Marcovy, Coach Matt Previts and Coach Tom Steigerwald. Hopefully, no one was left unmentioned. Keep up the tradition and thanks to all. Lebid Family |

Just a note of thanks to all that made me feel welcome on Saturday of the Midwest Scholastic Championships over last weekend. Coach Bob and Matt, I'll be looking for that group photo in the near future. Special thanks to Tim Conroy who gave me tour of the boats and the equipment plus introduced me around. It was a wonderful day for sure. Sorry that the Sunday's events were cancelled. It had to be disappointing. Warmest regards, Jim Swain '52 |

After our first morning of work outs in Murphy gym last January, I attached the Midwest Scholastic Rowing Association Champion Medal the coaches received in 2000 to the console of my car. I did this to remind me every morning and many afternoons as I drove to the gym or the boat house of my commitment to help Coach V and all the other coaches achieve our goal of coaching the best crew in the Mid West. This morning, as I make attempts to rise above the feelings of desolation, despair, discouragement, and the many other feelings I’m sure many of us share, I have taken that medal out of my car and have once again hung it in my office. I have achieved my goal, and I do not need a piece of hardware to tell me so. The way you have conducted yourselves as a team this year, in the gym, at practice, on the bus to and from the regatta’s we have participated in, your performance at those events, and your performance on Saturday, advancing in every event we entered, has given me all the validation I need to know that St. Ignatius Crew is the best in the MSRA. I’m thankful I’ve been able to be a part of your success, you should all be proud of yourselves. |

All the stairs we have run, all the laps on the track, all the erg pieces, and the notorious bridge runs have all been for this. Let's not waste it; let's prove to these other teams that they have no chance. Failure is not an option- good luck. |

Gentlemen, Midwest is the one time during the year where you really get to show what you are made of. It is what separates the good crews from the bad crews, and what separates the men from the boys. You guys have put in countless hours preparing for this race on the water, and on the ergs. Right now each and every one of you are in peak physical condition, and probably in the best shape of your life. Concentrate those countless hours that you all put in preparing for this race into each stroke. Each stroke is an opportunity to go harder and faster than every single other crew out there. A 1500 meter race goes by in a flash. There is no room for strokes that are not at 100% pressure. Give your all out there and make sure that you empty the tanks. Let there be no excuses. Pain is not an excuse. If there is one thing I can guarantee about this race, it is that no matter how much pain you experience during the race, no matter how much you have pushed your limits, if you cross the finish line first the pain will disappear. Pain will be the last thing that you think about if you win a race at Midwest. Always remember that pain is temporary, Glory lasts forever, and of course, the Glory is in the team. |

Good luck this weekend at Midwest, gentlemen. You have been preparing for this weekend since before school started. All the ergs, revco's, practices, etc. will all culminate into another Midwest Championship. Thus far, you have proven yourselves in competition. Midwest, however, is different. As best I can remember, we were faced with a very similar situation two years ago. Heading into Midwest winning all previous regattas, and then choking at Midwest. You have what is needed to repeat as champions. Dont take anything for granted. Once you are on that water, anything can happen. Have faith in your teammates and rely on what you have done since August and you will truly dominate. While you are gone I will be personally petitioning Fr. Timothy P. Kesicki, S.J. for something more than a piece of pizza and tater tots for winning Midwest. If you can repeat as Champions, you will truly have deserved it. Good Luck and God Bless...AZMAN |

listen fellas good luck to you this coming weekend. rember ignatius no longer seeks in the back door to win by one point. ignatius kicks down the front door and takes the regatta by storm. i know you have all worked hard to go far this season, and you deserve another championship title. however it seems as though you are still hung up on past regimes and past success. there are no longer any original members of team I on the crew anymore. And thre is certainly no hooptie ride any longer. you must progress foward with your own sense of originality and find encouragement amongst each other, and not in what has been accomplished in the past. it is fortunate for you that men like Pat Sledz and Brain Monroe created things like Team I. For it was the inspiration of that group that lead the crew to its first midwest victory. And of course you ought to be grateful to David McAllester for his creation of the Hooptie Ride. But now the eras of both are finished, and those oarsmen are graduated. Its good to have inspiratiion, but you must find it with each other, you must find something unique about the 2003 crew. it in finding something special about your crew this year that will make all your victories worth while. make this year your year, your races, your victories. |

First of all, the entry of that academy girl was unnecessary. Second, I think that it's time to focus on what lies in front. Culver and Pittsburgh were just tests, and we passed with flying colors. We need to turn our attention to the grand puba---Midwest! Let's go out there, give it our all, keep St. Ignatius where it belongs---at the top. Let's bust our balls, and do it for Coach V. Like Morsch and I say, it's definitely go time! |

Good Day Gentlemen, I am not a frequent visitor to our website, but I am here to express my opinion. I have noticed several occasions in which novices "walk" down to practice; for all of those who may be unaware, novices should be running. The only way in which we will be able to repeat as Midwest Champs is if everyone pushes each other; this includes members of the varsity team pushing not only themselves in practice, but the novices. During break I see it as a perfect opportunity to push the novices and instill that intensity which will encourage them to work hard to attain excellence. Seniors especially, I would assume that you more than any other members of the team would want to win Midwest this year. The Glory is in the team men. Thank You |

Great job all you guys. Cassidy is right tho- we are only working on technique and losing our shape- we have to do something. If you can't do ergs, so something to replace it, like running after skool. And Coach Previts- who am I rooming with at the regattas? |

Alex - The blank guestbook entries are caused by search "bots" that scan websites looking for email addresses and other useful items. They are the website equivalent of SPAM. Every few months i change the coding of the guestbook to prevent bots from making entries in the database. The owners of the bots... such as this one you have notivced recently, called "Production Bot DOT 3816B" which leaving bank entries, keep improving their coding also. When i get a weekend, i will block them out once again. I have to find a hole in their programming so as not to prohibit desired visitors (like you) to the guestbook section. In the meantime, Hope this information helps. |

hey fellas, please refrain posting stupid things up on this guest book. remember other people read this book all the time, including your competition. some things posted here are just ridiculoous . you have enough factors running against this year, so do not goof around and let other teams think you are a bunch of jackasses. so how about no mre messages about fat kids and what not. what seems funny now may seem like humiliation later |

Yo, whats up guys? I hope yall are hitting the gym and spinning the ergs as much as possible this year. You gotta rock the competition at Midwest, I got faith in you guys that you will carry on this tradition of being a Midwest Champion. So dont hold anything back when your lined up against some of the best crews in the midwest, because chances are they are gunning for you. PS- Keep an eye on Cornell Lightweight Crew, we got a real good chance at Eastern Sprints this year. |

At this point, it appears that only our jaw muscles are of championship calibre. Let's do a little less chest-thumping and let our erg times do the talking. I don't expect Marcovy's losing any sleep over any of this. |

Whoever is using the Fatty name in vain in a foolish attempt at wit, I'm taking you down - that's not a threat, it's a promise. In fact, the entire non-heavyweight team will cry like the little sissies they are when they see how low my erg scores are at the end of winter workouts. Reason is, I'm beating "Big Marcovy's" little erg score of 6:22 this year (Nothing personal). Know how I'm going to do it? By working out in the mornings with crew, afternoons on my own (or leading a pack of wanna-be-Fatty's), and taking a two mile run before I go to sleep at night. This, while keeping my grades up (For all of the former Junior-8 in the know). I leave you with one final question - "Will the real Fatty McGizzle Please stand up? That's right, I'm the only one standing right now. Booyah lightweights, I own you and your puny erg scores. To have erg scores like mine you must renounce the dark lightweight side of the crew force and come to the heavy side. I have two friends, This is Hans (Fatty's right bicep), and this is Franz (Fatty's left bicep), and they are here to pump ::clap:: you up! Remember Heavies, the Oar is the weapon of the Fatty. |

Can you guys please win Midwest again this year. I bet a lot of money you would win with some other midwest rowers here. Its an insane amount of money and if i cant come up with it bad things will happen to me. But anyways no pressure and keep working out like cassidy says. |

Right on Morsch. The "Also-Ran" status is simply not an option. We must succeed this year. Only those that have proven that they have the undying will to win will remain to go back to back. |

Guys, I think it's time we all woke up and thought about the upcoming season for a second. Seniors, we've had the chance to repeat before, and we couldnt do it as sophomores. Of all people, we should be the ones on the ergs in the morning. Not just the sophomores. I realize I have not been there either, but I will start. I think, this being the class of 2003's last shot, the prime year for the Juniors, and the beginning for the sophs, that we destroy anyone that stands in our way of going back to back. The key: Hard work + Teamwork. We can do it. THE GLORY IS IN THE TEAM! Oh, and if you dont like what I have to say, please, keep it to yourselves. |
