Coach V is quoted in a recent kid's book about rowing. Does anyone else find it a little unsettling that the philosophy of Coach V is unleashed on toddlers? The link is below. http://www.mymommyrows.com/funfacts.htm |

Heyyyy Yaaaa!!! Listen all you powder-puffs. Make sure you're working out and erging during the Christmas Holiday or you'll end up fat like me, Coach Spinner, and Coach Degrandis. Coach V, Coach Saer, and all great oarsmen keep their form because they work hard during the off season. All you seniors need to step up and lay the hammer down for the rest of the team. No rest until the Monday after Midwest!!! |

Guys, these winter months are vital to the success of the team com April and May. These weeks before mandatories begin are especially important. Do not make the mistake of thinking that Ignatius is the only team in the area to hold offseason workouts and get really fit and fast before January even comes. Seniors, varsity heavyweights, merely showing up for practice is not enough. When I was back for Thanksgiving, many rowers were not even bothering to come to practice. Teams notice the fact that Ignatius won overall points again, as well as that it had a national championship crew. Relishing last year's success, as a novice, lightweight, or junior is fruitless. Complacency is the equivalent of boat cancer. If you hit a target for an erg time, get a new target. If you don't hit it, commit yourself to destroying it the next time. Only one crew can win gold at Midwest, and in the past, it hasn't usually been Ignatius. Aim for gold, not for points. If anyone wants a little motivation, check out http://www.usrowing.org/itemdisplay.asp?id=1611, it looks like North Allegheny's heavies are putting the work in. |

Yeah yeah everyone's enjoying their few petty little days off of practice, but I can't stop thinking about winter conditioning this year. It's my favorite part about this team. The early mornings running across the frosty, windy Lorain-Carnegie Bridge and feeling like your face is going to break right off, having none other than Coach Pat Monroe dictate pushups, and the enjoyment that comes from listening to the jovial Coach McQueen telling us we're all still turkeys.. Oops sorry about the fantasy. I just actually wondered if we'd have some returning heroes this winter and spring for "inspiration" (aka coersion)-- Brookhart-- and everyone's favorite 'Hey Ya' sound-alike Jodie Bowers. Again I apologize if anyone lost any IQ points reading this. Cya'll sooner than you hope (I'm sure). |

First of all, good luck to the guys going to Beantown for the HOC. Do well and look to the win....to quote the famous historical writer Sun Tzu on "competion", (my euphemism there), "A clever fighter excels at winning with ease...he wins by making no mistakes, for it means conquering an opponent (sic) that is already defeated...in competion (sic) let your great objective be victory"...go cats, we are all behind you in spirit though not there physically. You are our best and no matter the outcome, we know that you all strive to win. Secondly, my sincerest thanks to all those that assist Mr. Ed Zdankiewicz, (Captain EZ) and myself (Mr. J.), in both setting up and tearing down and loading the equipment trailer at the regattas...it is a tremendous help, and for those of us, (me), that are old and creaky, no small God send. The names are to numerous to list, but you know who you are. Special thanks to Beth Campbell for her organizing, the Movens for their never ending participation, Jay M. who's always around, and Uncle Tim for whatever,(Go Schumi...inside joke that), and all the crew guys who pitch in and drag stuff all over to get to the trailer.... Hope to see you all next season and at the Pot Luck thing next weekend! |

Thank you for your gracious letter considering our flooding in Marietta last month - we moved our shells and equipment 3 different times and had 9 feet of water in our lower bay but nothing was seriously damaged - a real team effort - many people's homes and over 100 businesses were severly flooded which puts things in perspective - on behalf of Marietta High School, our coaches and parents, and our town - I would like to say what a class act SI Crew is both on and off the water. WE will look forward to racing SI this year. Jim Harry, President, HRC, Marietta HS Crew Boosters |

I'd just like everyone to thin about Mr. Mack's speech today. Like he said, he did not have the most natural talent at his sport, but he worked hard and dedicated himself to his goal, and he succeeded. He thought that the gold medal was above him and out of reach, but he dedicated himself to the task. That is what we strive for every day. Whether it be the Head of the Ohio or Head of the Charles in the fall, or Midwest, Stotes, or Nationals in the spring, we have to give it our all every day- because one day, I guarantee you, it will pay off. We got a small glimpse of it with our J4+ last year at nationals. It is not impossible. On Saturday, when we are 5 minutes into the race and your body tells you that you cannot keep up this same amount of power for the rest of the race, make up your mind, tell yourself that you can, and work for it. It is this attitude that has made us all champions. The glory is in the team. |

Let me just be the first to say IT'S GO TIME! Good attendance for tomorrow's setup = everyone gets out sooner; coach gave me permission to do as I see fit to those who don't come. Seriously guys, let's get out there and establish what it means to be on the St. Ignatius VARSITY Rowing TEAM. Even you novices, we are not just some club on the same level as cheese club, etc. We need to row like the champions we have been 3 years in a row.. |

Hey guys, good luck this fall season. I know it's easy to look past the fall as being unimportant because it's no Midwest. This has, in the past, led to some disappointing results in our races, including losing to Saint John's Jesuit in the Varsity 8 at our home race for two years in a row. It's vital to defend your river and send a message early and often this school year: that St. Ignatius is THE power in the Midwest. That doesn't just mean being complacent and aiming for points in Detroit again. With a team as large and as deep as Ignatius, it should not be a problem winning points titles. Aim for gold medals. You guys are capable. You have the talent, the equipment, the coaching, everything is in place for a great season. The only missing ingredient, the one that ultimately determines success, is hard work as a team. Don't expect to win because you did last year. Don't expect to win because you pull a good erg score (none of you do anyway). Expect to win because you know you've worked longer and of course, harder, than every other rower you race against. And you will. Simple as that. |

WOW! What a website. This is phenominal. My wife tried to make me feel old when I celebrated my 31 b-day this week, but it didn't work until I looked on this website and found out that a number of the coaches were rowers when Brad and I coached back in the day (I can't even imagine how Coach V feels. Just kidding coach! You're the best). Congrats to Coach Previts and the entire staff and crew on some excellent seasons. The Spinner family always enjoys seeing you down in Columbus. We have a wonderful picture of the crew holding our youngest son Joshua Ignatius. The gentleman who were down here were truly "men for others" and were a class act. We look forward to seeing you again. |

To those interested, there's a small article(one sentence) acknowledging the J-4's win at nationals. It is in Friday, June 4th's Sports Section, page 2, towards the bottom by the center fold. Great season to all rowers! Let's keep up the summer workouts so that we can hit it hard when it comes time to get on the water in the fall. |

A VERY BIG THANK YOU to ALL the parents and crew members who helped out this year when it came to loading, unloading, setting up and tearing down the tents at all the regattas. Special thanks to Ed Z. and the whole Z family, (you know who you are), Tim McKenna and family (for numerous last minute duty), Beth Campbell for her patience and expertise and her crew of carbo volunteers too numerous to mention, (thanks Pam P. for getting the boys all in a row when needed), the Movens' and their crerw of assistants. It made the loading and unloading and tear down that much easier. We had a great season, one to remember, and I look forward to being with all of you next year. Great job coaches, great job crew. And last but not least (cause I live with her and she puts up with everything)...thank you Gwen! Mr. J |

Gentlemen, may I be one of the first to congratulate you on becoming, once again, Midwest Champions. The culmination of months, and even years of hard work have paid off as you are now champions. May you take great pride in adding another banner to a hallway full of the champions of yesterday. Bask in all the glory that this brings, get some well needed rest and prepare to spend the summer getting in shape to defend what promises to be another Championship season in the fall. Gentlemen, again, congratulations |

It's getting to be that time of year; I can feel it. I keep having dreams of the final races of the season. Guys, these next couple weeks will be the culmination of all you've worked for--whether it has been a whole year, or four. They will be filled with more fun than you've had all year, but they will also require the most attention. They will be a challenge--yes, but the bigger challenge you have faced was getting up every morning before dawn, putting everything else in your life aside and rowing with a strong will and heart. That took guts. So all you need to do for these next few races is use the same passion you showed this sport for every stretch in practice. Oh, and guys, one more thing--HAVE A BLAST! LET'S-GO-CATS! |

But, if there's one thing I'd want, instead of taking my chemistry and biology exams (I mean, c'mon. they're so much fun!) it would be another shot at Midwest. From what I've heard, you have earned the right to be called Midwest champions for 3 straight years. Go and get it. See you in Detroit. ~J-Cass |

Guys, as you wind down to Midwest, just remember, as you're busting yout butt at practice that last week, I will be on my butt taking my final exams. So, to treat myself to my first year of college in the bag, I'm going to come to Midwest to watch you guys defend the championship. Don't let me down. On a serious note, you guys have everything you need to win. Solid coaching, the best river on this side of the Mississippi, but most importantly, the will to win and the time to practice. Hit those stretchers hard every stroke and remember...pain is temporary, pride is forever. Even now, I can call myself a Midwest champ and the pain from those erg pieces has long worn off. Good luck to all at Midwest and beyond. Shoutouts to my old V8 buds Tommy, Hurley^2, and Diatri. Get the job done. |

Gentlemen, another season lies before you in waiting. While you are slaving away on the ergs in the MPR, or running across the icy Lorain/Carnegie bridge in the early morning, know that the pain you feel, the work you do, is weakness leaving your body so that you may help your teammates push forward. Push each other "to the edge of the envelope", and beyond. SI CREW is always capable of more. Good luck gentlemen. I will see you all in Detroit. Stay Motivated! J-Cass. |

What up crew. Puke many times for your coaches this winter in the gym...it will make winning the midwest all the better. Also, put on some muscles, its always good to intimidate the other teams, and you dont want to look weak in a bright yellow boat. Someone needs to bring back the Hooptie...We were the biggest players out on the water and no one could touch us. When the crowd chanted "HOOPTIE RIDE" haha..we looked like the most ghetto school out there....Thats what you need to be. Have fun, but win first. Holla back at your boy Previts fo sho. |

Life is a series of challenges and your response to those challenges—whether to back down cowardly or to lay waste to that which is in your path. Gentlemen of St. Ignatius Crew, you have been given a challenge by your coaches, your alumni, your teammates, and your vile opponents. This challenge is to rise above your competition in every aspect of rowing: to prepare with a ferocity that no other crew can endure, to practice with the burning desire to make every second count, to settle harder than any opponent can imagine, to sprint faster than any boat can hope to match. It is your decision, St. Ignatius Crew’s decision, whether to stand on the cold beach of Stony Creek watching some second rate team win or to carry back to the hallowed halls the gold that will represent the most stunning victory the sport has ever seen. But this choice is not made on the bus to the competition, this decision must be made tomorrow morning as you slam your legs down, detesting the foul sight of a red and black uni’. The challenge has been extended, and there is not a group of teammates, or true friends, whom I would trust more to rise above this challenge. Until Midwest, John |

As yet another racing season is on the horizon, for those of you that showed up for the optional condition, good. For those of you that didn't, you will have to work twice as hard to get to where you should be at this point in time. Everyone still needs to push harder each day than the previous one. The Midwest Championship is not easy to win, I know this, I am a two-time Midwest Champ. Showing up for practice everyday will get you nothing. Showing up ready to bust your butt and give more than you think you can will win the Championship for you. You cannot simply show up and go through the motions. Going all out during every aspect of practice and being a leader will help win the Midwest Championship. The team is only as good as its slowest man. You are St. Ignatius Crew, the defending Midwest Scholastic Champions, and do not ever forget that, and make sure the boats you race in a few short months know that as you wait for them at the finish line. The man in your seat in the boats lined up across from you has no idea what he is up against. You should feel sorry for him, because you know that you worked harder than he did in practice and no matter what he does, he cannot compete with you. The road to the Midwest Scholastic Championship is a long, tough, and taxing one and the only way to win is to win as a team. Uphold the Crew philosophy of "The Glory is in the Team" and the rest will fall into place. Good luck this season, and remember who you are and what you are defending! |
