The season is a long one, to be sure, and thus far, it seems fair to say that the results have probably not been where you want them to be. The good news? There is time to fix that. The time begins now, and each second you waste is a little bit of speed you don't have at your disposal later on. Trust me, you will have plenty of time to look back on your Ignatius rowing glory, the medals and Midwests, after it's over. Do not make the mistake of wasting time caught up in your own image and past success. Fast crews in the history of St. Ignatius were not made fast by the fact that they carry the name Ignatius and row with our blue and gold blades. They were forged through morning after morning of hard work and unity, created by those rowers in them. You are those rowers now. Seize the opportunity that has been laid out in front of you and make yourself as fast as you want to be. People expect you to be fast and are preparing for you as though you will be. The question for you is this: are you preparing yourself to overcome the efforts of every other team you will be racing? Get to work, and good luck in Boston. |

Hey guys, Good work at Head of the Cuyahoga. Keep working hard and do some damage at HOTO. HOTO medals are few and far between so if you come home with one it's something to be proud of. I hope everyone is working hard, especially you Joe McKenna. I know everyone has been talking to you guys about races beyond Midwest-Stotes and Nationals. Those are great goals to have but if you really want it you have to win them now. Put in some extra steady state work on the erg and you will be in such good shape come winter conditioning. This is going to be a tough year, we made lots of enemies last year at Midwest so lets all do our best to defend our Midwest titles and also our boat titles. Lets keep that Valerian Cup at home where it belongs. Thats all for now, when I think of something motivational I will be sure to call Mark Monroe and have him relay it to everyone. One last thing, anyone who wants to come visit Rutgers let me know. You can sleep on my floor. |

hey guys, to who evers still checking this durring the summer i just have a few things to say. first something brad said (There is nothing special about Philadelphia crews, except that they are the cockiest people around. St. Joe's thinks they deserve to win every race because they have a large endowment and 200 kids trying out for their team. Guess what, they are still just regular high school students that pull really hard and care a lot about rowing.). So joes thinks they're special. So what if they've got 2 million kids trying out for the team. They still dont have the drive and heart of an ignatian rower. You guys have a lot to live up to and i know you can do it. if everyone puts in the same heart i saw everyday on the water and in the gym this year then you guys will do big things. Guys this team is taking huge steps to be great. We're living in the best time to be a part of the wildcat navy. A few years ago we squeeked by in midwest, not winning by much. Then this year we rocked midwest. No one could touch us. we dont win cause we have 200 kids to pick from and make cuts, we win because every last man out there gave it his all. So now its up to you guys (especially next years seniors) to continue the teams growth. Go on from midwest, you guys have the tallent to win next year. Show those east coast schools to watch out for St. Ignatius Cleveland. Good luck next year P.S.- I'll miss you. |

Hey guys, for all of you who are reading this while you are sitting on your butts eating freeze pops, I just ahve a few comments about my observations while I am here in Philly. 1: Make sure you stay active. Prep rowers are going to camps all over the country. There are even some here at Penn AC rowing twice a day. If we want to take the next step and compete at Stotes and Nationals, we have to build on the physical attributes we achieved this spring. Do not allow yourself to revert back to a fat slob. 2: There is nothing special about Philadelphia crews, except that they are the cockiest people around. St. Joe's thinks they deserve to win every race because they have a large endowment and 200 kids trying out for their team. Guess what, they are still just regular high school students that pull really hard and care a lot about rowing. Care more. Pull harder. Beat them. 3: Keep building our legacy. Very few kids around here know who we are, except for a kid from Marietta and one from New Trier. I have been asked, hey you guys won at Cinci, right? Because people thought the St. Ignatius Crew on my hat, shirt, and shorts stood for St. Ignatius San Francisco. We are going to compete at Stotes and Nationals eventually, it's just a matter of how soon. Make the decision earlier this year. Don't decide to go for a medal at Stotes in May, or in March, or in January, or even in September. Commit now, and you will achieve the results you are hoping for. Keep these things in mind this summer. I never got a chance to win a race on the national level during my four years at Ignatius. For a lot of you, this is your last chance. Midwest, Stotes, Nationals, and Youth will be here before you know it. |

Congratulations coaches and oarsmen on a very impressive showing at Midwest. Be proud of the fact that you have done things never before accomplished by St. Ignatius Crew. Varsity heavyweights in particular, you have done something truly outstanding that Ignatius rowers have been dreaming of since day one. Know that you have made those many years of dreams, those thousands of hours of work done by hundreds of oarsmen, past and present, come to fruition. In capturing the Valerian Cup, yet another major step forward has been taken for the program. Do not stop here and become complacent. Bigger, further steps are still out there to be taken by those willing to have the vision, tenacity, and desire necessary. Lastly, and most importantly, enjoy what you have worked so hard to achieve. It is rare to be able to do something of this magnitude and share it with so many great people. Congratulations again on an inspired (and inspiring) performance. |

Congradulations lightweight 8. I personally know what it's like to battle with a crew like UA all season long. We took Marietta all the way to the last stroke in every race and came short in Cinci. Your tremendous accomplishments this whole season have made all of us lightweights proud. To the heavyweights: your race lived up to the hype. Watching it was sureal. The V2 A & B: you guys have again proven the importance and sanctitiy of team. The Novices: your hard work and depth should have all of your heads high. Gentlemen, the magnitude of what happened on May 15th 2005 may never be duplicated. Lightweight Pride! |

Specail congrats to the Novice 145# 4+, the 145# 4+, the 150# 8+, the 2V, and the V8 for bringing home the gold. |

St. Ignatius Crew, I just wanted to wish you luck at Midwest. You have a tradition of beating other teams to uphold, so do it. Before the race take a deep breath and know that the other boats on that starting line are about to get smoked. You guys have been working hard all year, harder than any other crew. Now it's time to show them. Take pride in every stroke you take and crush every crew that is trying to take your title. Think of all the early mornings and think of every member on your crew, you all deserve to win. Get prepared to finish out the year by trouncing all those teams at Midwest, don't let anyone stand in your way. Again, good luck, I can't wait to hear Coach Previts tell me that you guys swept Midwest. Represent the Crew and represent Ignatius. -Pat |

It was just breaking sunrise over the LTV turning basin. The flame jets shot fire in to an orange sky from the smokestacks, the air already warm for early May. Coach begins the piece, whipping a finger behind him, pointing at the blazing fires. "Can you see that!?" He calls above the cox. "Can you feel this city forging you into tempered steel!?" His emotions send shivers to the oarsmen. "That's what it means to be a part of this team. That's what it means to be a Champion!" That was one of the hardest races of our lives. Good Luck Boys. Bring it home. We'll be there with you, all the way. |

Hey guys, good job with the racing. Sounds like the season has gone well thus far. With Midwest approaching, I'm sure there is no lack of motivation, but it seems that Marietta has lofty expectations of its currently unbeaten varsity eight. I'm sure it would knock them down a notch if Stignatius were to show them a thing or two in Cincinnati. Be aware that there are lots of other teams working hard and vying for the same cup that you are and attack the last practices before Midwest with that in mind. http://www.mariettatimes.com/sports/story/052202005_spt03crewpp.asp |

Hey guys, as always, hit the ergs hard every morning, run those stairs like there's no tomorrow, and do situps till you puke. It'll all be worth it when you dominate everyone at Midwest, beyond. Who knows what you're capable of this year. The bar of excellence just keeps getting higher. To all you seniors (or even juniors), if you are interested in coming to Notre Dame (granted, you would have had to apply already), send me an email with any questions or if you just want my straight up opinion on the place. Despite Aaaron Marcovy's misgivings,( see the last posting for 2004), I can assure you that all of my 7 grandchildren have been subjected to my philosophy as toddlers and --so far at least--without apparent adverse effect. In fact my 9 year-old grandson CJ just pulled what I am claiming as the "unofficial" 500 meter world record for his age group--2:05. Although I seem to recall that Aaron rowed as a contestant in the Hammer Ergatta in 1991 or 1992, there is no record of his 2000 meter time. ---or is there? |
