St. Ignatius wins regatta

Marietta boys finish third, girls take fifth

St. Ignatius crew coach Bob Valerian felt humbled in accepting the Lindamood Cup on behalf of the all-male school.

"It's good to do this well in Marietta because we basically patterned our program after Marietta's program," Valerian said prior the tropy presentation following Saturday's Marietta Invitational Regatta. "We've been coming her for 12 years and this is the first time we've ever won a trophy.

"Heck, we've never even been close for me to stick around for the trophy presentation."

The Cleveland-based Wildcats amassed 162 points by placing in all nine finals and posting six wins -- both men's varsity four races, the men's junior four, the men's lightweight eight, the men's junior eight and men's varsity eight.

"It's poignant to be accepting this trophy, knowing how much Ralph Lindamood has given to the sport of crew in Marietta," Valerian said. "He's certainly in our prayers today.

"To win this cup, you guys don't know it, but this is as high an honor as you can possibly win in rowing because this trophy is named after Ralph Lindamood and it has 'Marietta High School' engraved all over it."

Lindamood, the longtime crew coach at Marietta College, passed away Sunday.

Parkersburg finished second in the boys point standings with 63 points, while Marietta was third with 48 points.

On the girls' side, Riverview (Mich.) parlayed wins in the junior four and the junior eight into a narrow margin of victory over Notre Dame Academy of Toledo while Marietta was fifth in the 11-team field with 49 points.

For Marietta's girls, the highlight was a victory in the lightweight four by Meredith Hahn, Liz Clare, Tracy Breadmore, Maurie Casto and coxswain Katie Bucklad, in which the Tigers held off a late charge by Parkersburg South to win by nearly three seconds.

"We knew South was going to pull a tough race because we raced them here (April 23) and it was so close that we weren't even sure that we had won," Casto said. "The difference was like a half a second, and we didn't know we had won until we got off the water."

"This race was hard because we came straight from finishing second in the lightweight eight (to Notre Dame Academy)," she said. "We went into it dead tired, straight off the river and into the another boat."

Marietta's only other win was in the men's novice four, featuring Luke Beebe, Josh Talbott, Joe Schanken, Brandon Mattes and coxswain Tim Rinehart.

Marietta crew coach Alphonso "Ponch" Morales was disappointed to see the Tigers' dominating run in the Marietta Invitational come to an end.

"We've never lost that trophy and I hate to lose to anybody, but St. Ignatius is a very class act," Morales said. "I knew they were going to be tough coming in."

Morales said equipment problems prevented the Tigers from being truly competitive in the men's varsity eight

"I'm not making any excuses, but if we'd just quit beating ourselves," he said. "Off the start in that last race, we were out in front bow to stern on everybody and then we jumped a seat. We couldn't get it back on, and it's pretty much the end of the race."

NEXT RACE: TIGERS at Brundage Memorial Regatta at Parkersburg Saturday.
